At Midnight Plays a Dance Tune

During his mother’s illness and after her death, Roy went through an intense period in his life, in which he felt attracted to the fringes of society. He raced in his car, roamed the streets at night and indulged in sex and drugs. He always had music playing in his appartment, no matter what time it was. During this period of extremities, the memory of his former neighbour Antoine suddenly came back. As a child Roy had been fascinated by the man and looking back now it seemed like Roy’s current life mirrored that of his former neighbour. Even though Roy does not remember much of Antoine, (other than the music he would play at night: “Danse Macabre”) he still feels like this neighbour experienced the same kind of period as he did. Antoine did not comply with the rules of society and eventually, after years of trouble, he got evicted from his house. Roy – who was six years old at the time – saw from the window of his opposite neighbor how the furniture of Antoine was carried out. That moment had a big impact on him as a child and now that the memory of his neighbor has resurfaced, his fascination for Antoine might be stronger than it ever was. Roy decides to record his thoughts in speech memo’s directed at Antoine and also goes on a search for him. This story, of two lives that crossed paths in the Bretagnestraat in Sittard, is told in one very personal and daring documentary essay. It tells the story of Roy and the intense period that he went trough. This period is depicted by a collage of many different characters and scenes. When the period of extremities comes to an end and Roy re-enters society, he finds Antoine. What was the cause for the extreme behaviour of his former neighbor in that time before his eviction?
