Occasionally I’m able to spend time in a place where I can observe how the natural world takes shape outside the anxious time frame of our hurried species. In this world relationships seem to have evolved to perpetuate balance over long periods of time as opposed to short cycles of calm interspersed with brief periods of chaos. Overruns and schedules don’t appear to exist there as they do in our manufactured world. Symbiosis is defined as a close, prolonged association between two or more different biological species. This relationship can be symbiotic (mutualistic), where both parties involved benefit from the interaction, or it can be parasitic, where one party benefits while the other is harmed. Over a period of 32 million years some kelp species including giant kelp have evolved transport mechanisms for organic as well as inorganic compounds similar to mechanisms of transport in trees and other vascular plants. The waste water treatment plant being built in North Vancouver was slated to be finished in 2020 and is now projected to be completed in 2030 after many delays and costly overruns. Waste water treatment plants typically last without intense maintenance for 40 – 50 years. Filmed on location by Kent Tate in the traditional territory of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation in Tofino, B.C.+ the traditional territory of the Musqueam, Squamish and səlilwətaɬ First Nations in Vancouver, B.C. – Canada
