Bonsai

A once joyful teenager, Frida, a girl with a head full of leaves is faced with challenges after losing her mother, Lu. Frida has a head full of leaves to depict the metaphor of the relationship humans have with nature to how parents treat their children. Nature has to be taken care of in order for it to beautifully develop. Unfortunately, today, individuals today are sometimes not aware of the slow but terrible destruction they are capable of. Children on the other hand need nurturing from their parents to have a good upbringing both mentally and physically. But due to outside forces hindering them from doing so, some parents are unable to provide the proper nurturing and support their children need. Lu, who prioritized her daughter’s happiness, left Frida with the beautiful gift of music which later on we learn becomes her escape from reality. Without her mother, Frida faces problems in school, internally, and at home where she is left behind to live under the parenting of her father. Frida’s father, Finn, does not support nor appreciate her passion for music due to the fact that it reminds him of his wife who is not physically present with them any longer. Because of this, Frida regresses into a melancholic state. Monett, one of Frida’s friends, attempts to save Frida from her state of deprivation and in doing so, is also able to help Frida’s father find his way back to music and more so, a way to once again connect with his wife. We tap into Frida’s mind where we see her in her most comfortable state. Frida’s use of music and movement in her interior world helps her find inner piece amidst the negativity she faces in reality. Paired with a melancholic piano piece, she is able to feel her mother’s love and touch once again.
